My Review:

I admit, after reading book one in this series, I was a little iffy on whether or not this was a series for me.  I felt that in the earlier book, that Bronwyn  seemed like a weak character, and she just didn't resonate well with me.  This book took all of that worry, and tossed it out the window.  Bronwyn is totally in her element in this book, and she turns into a strong vampire queen.  I was actually a bit surprised by the entire night and day change in her personality, but I could totally see how living a year with Ronan could change a person.

Bronwyn was admirable in her attempts to save Rider from pain, and I feel that this really kept the important part of her humanity in tact from the first book.  Even though she knew she wasn't going to be with him, she also didn't want him to die, even though it would be the easiest route to solve her problems.  I found this fantastic, because although she had changed into more of the monster type of vampire, she still kept that bit of humanity that kept her able to be a good friend.

After reading this installment, I really look forward to continuing this series with the next book.  I hope it comes out soon!

Excerpt

Bronwyn stopped in her tracks when she saw someone very familiar leaning against the building across the street, dressed head to toe in leather. “I’m guessing you all decided on a field trip at the same time?” She said sarcastically, as she zipped across the street.
“Well, someone has to clean up after his mess,” Carly scoffed.
Bronwyn’s lips thinned out, “I saw him, earlier. He seems to be out of control.”
“Hmmm, I wonder why that is?” Carly pressed a finger to her lips in mock concentration.
“Look, I don’t need a lecture from you, too. I got enough from Seraph.”
Carly smiled. “You know, I want so bad to stay mad at you. It would be a heck of a lot easier if I did. But, it’s too damn good to see you.”
Bronwyn’s tough exterior melted, “I know. I’ve missed you so much. Is Tuck here, too?”
“He’s looking for Rider; we followed him here. I didn’t even know you were back in the States. Seraph told us, yesterday.” There was a hint of something in Carly’s voice.
“Look, I know this is an f-ed up situation. I had to make a clean break, though. I couldn't live half in and half out with Ronan.”
“You ruined him.” Carly’s voice was harsh.
Bronwyn laughed. “Really? Rider is a big boy; far older than I am. His choices are his own. Did you really come here to make me feel guilty? If so, you may as well leave now.” Bronwyn’s tone was cool.
“Who are you?” Carly took a step back.
“I’m the same person I’ve always been, Carly, I’m just not fighting it anymore.” Bronwyn leaned in and kissed Carly’s cheek before heading off into the night.

Review: Friend-Zoned

Friend-Zoned

Nikolai Leokov never thought he'd fall in love with the only girl he's ever befriended.

Valentina Tomic has issues with commitment after the ultimate betrayal.

When Tina decides to make broody Nik's day better, she never thought she would end up friends with the hard man.

Nik has never had a woman be so affectionate to him without expecting something in return.

Nik and Tina cordially invite you to read Friend-zoned.

A story of friendship, humour and love.

Review:

Maybe I'm just a sucker for a friends to lovers romance, but this book seems nearly impossible not to love.  Nik and Tina make such an unlikely set of friends, and their love builds slowly and sweetly.  This book had a little bit of everything - action, humour, love, and plenty of excitement of all kinds.  I was up all night reading this book, and I didn't regret it for one minute.

Tina's character was heartbreaking.  I can't even begin to talk about how much strength and perseverance is bottled up in just this one character.  I couldn't help but shed a tear or two while reading about her history.  She's riddled with loss and pain, but she hid it from all prying eyes.  The best (or worst) part of it all, is that her pain was so real.  It wasn't just drama llama crap, it was truly a truly heartbreaking occurrence that was completely believable, and could happen to anyone in the matter of a few seconds.

Honestly?  This is the first book I've ever felt bad for waiting to find on sale.  Had I known the wonder and awesomeness that was between these pages, I would have quickly paid full price without a second thought.

If you read any form of romance, this book is for you.  This book will grab your heartstrings and take you for a fun and thrilling ride.

My Review:

Every so often, everyone needs a little taste of small town sweetness, and this book definitely has it.  As I'm from a small town myself, I can easily understand how quickly the rumour mill can pump out information that you would normally never want someone to know, so I found the insane speed that the town learned all about anything that Ivy and Marcus were up to, strangely easily believable.  I can remember a few times in my past where I wasn't even able to get all the way home before my family had already heard all about my day's adventures, so seeing this small town in action really made me feel a bit homesick for my own small town.

As far as the characters went, this book has a fantastic cast.  Not only are Ivy and Marcus well developed and easy to root for, I found favourites in some of the oddest places.  Ivy's grandmother!  Wow, is that lady a firecracker!  I absolutely loved her grandmother and all her foul-mouthed quirkiness.  I also found Preston strangely appealing.  Even with his privileged attitude, it seemed as if there was a little bit more behind his story that just wasn't yet told.  Out of everyone, I really hope to read more about Preston, if nothing else but to crack his elitist attitude.

The story line in this book is solid, and as many other Entangled books, has a feeling as if this story could actually happen.  This is a quality that I look forward to whenever I pick up an Entangled book, and I was not disappointed.  The characters are normal people.  They have normal problems, and they have their flaws, just as we all do.

Overall, this is book is a fun contemporary romance that I would recommend to any of my romantic readers.

Review: Lovestruck in London

Lovestruck in London
By:  Rachel Schurig

Rating: 5 Cogs

Blurb:

Lizzie Medina went to London to reinvent herself. Tired of being the quiet baby sister, and in no hurry to settle into a boring existence in surburbia, she escapes from home at the first opportunity. When she settles in London for a year of post-graduate studies, Lizzie is sure she’ll be able to start a whole new life. Immerse herself in the books she loves. Explore a new country. Work on her dream of writing a novel. She might even be able to find a little bit of excitement for once.

But falling unexpectedly in love with up-and-coming actor Thomas Harper causes Lizzie to re-think… everything. Just as she’s convinced herself this small-town girl from the Midwest can handle this great adventure, Thomas’s career suddenly explodes to superstar levels, and Lizzie finds herself forced to navigate the fame game of red carpets, catty co-stars, gossip magazines, and paparazzi. When she wished for a new life, she had no idea it would be anything like this!

Lizzie must now determine if her love—and her confidence—are strong enough to get her through the complications of dating a movie star. Even if she and Thomas are able to pull through before she has to leave London, how will she deal with the inevitability of returning to a life at home that no longer feels like her own? Will she follow her family’s wishes or follow her heart? Will the Lizzie she discovered in London be strong enough to help her pursue her dreams?

Review:

I absolutely loved the story captured here! Lizzie and Thomas are adorable characters that are easy to root for, even in the mess of all of Thomas' hype as a movie star. The characters are very well developed and well rounded. Their friends were fabulous, and so down to earth even with the crazy amount of fame going on in the story.

The love is sweet and even though it grew very quickly between the two leads, it was still believable. I feel that one of my favourite aspects of the book is that it really caters to it's American readers, even though it obviously takes place out of the country. It clearly explains all the differences in language, such as the truck of a car being a boot. Often when I'm reading books that take place in different countries, I get a tad confused with common words with different meanings, and I love the fact that the author squashed these differences with a simple explanation in this book.

This book had a great moral! Be yourself even if it's not what is expected from you. I love how this was added into the book, and how Lizzie's family reacted to the news that she was not going to follow in her sister's footsteps to become a teacher, even after receiving all the necessary education.

Overall, this is an extremely cute book that I wasn't able to put down. I definitely recommend this to contemporary readers.

Excerpts:
Someone else came over to offer Nadine their congratulations, so Josh said goodbye and went to his locker to get his backpack. He figured he would meet up with Andrea and Rosa in the parking lot. He fumbled with the combination before finally getting the door to swing open. Something glittered on the top shelf and caught his eye. He reached for it, and a small scrap of paper fluttered to the floor.
At first he wasn’t sure what he was holding. It was a pink plastic tiara with some big gaudy plastic jewels. It was the type of thing he had seen in dollar stores for little girls’ birthday parties. It was practically broken in half, and the edges were sharp. Josh pricked his finger on the jagged point, and a few drops of blood welled from the small wound. He put his finger in his mouth as he bent to pick up the paper that had fallen. When he read it, the broken crown suddenly made sense and he wondered how he could have been so naïve. He should have realized from the instant he saw it what it meant.
“Josh decided to play around

Now one of his girls is under the ground.

Another has a big bump on her head.

And by the end of the dance, the queen will be dead.”

My Review:

I was a bit surprised at how well the mystery was kept within these pages.  Normally when I read a book like this, I am able to figure out who the "bad guy" is pretty quickly, but this book kept me on my toes and questioned my beliefs on who the killer was until the very last pages.  I never saw what was coming!

Josh is a well developed character, and I had a great time reading through his eyes.  I wish there was a little bit more about the romance with Rosa, but I can see why that wasn't on the front burner considering how all of his exes were dealing with tragic accidents.  I just didn't feel like I was able to create a very lasting connection to Rosa, but all the same.. The book was great!

It was interesting for me to read as if I were a teenage boy.  I rarely read books where the protagonist is a male, so it was a nice switch up for me.

If you like a mysterious YA, this is definitely a book you would enjoy!
